Triple Lock-in Strikes Out With This Consumer

University of Ottawa's Michael Geist talks about the "Triple Lock on Apple iPhone" that is coming to Canada.

Wow! I was concerned about too much lock-in and protectionism on the Apple iPhone before, but Roger's new twist on protectionism, high-fees, combined with new legislation in Canada (bill C-61) makes this product a no-go for me. Until I see openness and value for me as a consumer, I'll stick to my plain ole cell phone for now!

Closed Market Thinking Leads Nowhere

Because of Canadian copyright law and backward thinking of traditional distributors of content in Canada, Canadians are being increasingly locked out of access to new services and content.

See "Canada locked out of tech fun" by Raju Mudhar, of the Toronto Star on November 25, to see what I mean.

If I am not able to buy any of these goods or services at any price, who is benefiting? How are artists and content creators and owners rewarded in this economic lock-out model?

I guess this just another case of why "open" markets and systems will always succeed and why "closed" markets fail. It is why as a technologist, I continue to support open standards, open solutions, and open markets.
